Simon BaeckensPrincipal investigator
Simon completed his PhD in Biology in 2017 at the Functional Morphology Lab at the University of the Antwerp (Belgium), working with Prof. Van Damme. He subsequently held postdoc positions at Harvard University (Losos Lab, USA), Macquarie University (Whiting & Shine Lab, Australia), and Ghent University (Shawkey Lab, Belgium). Since September 2025, he has been an Assistent Professor at the Earth and Life Institute (ELI) at UCLouvain (Belgium), where he leads the laboratory for Animal Evolutionary Ecology.

Alice is a PhD student studying the ecological and evolutionary impacts of heavy metal pollution on common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis) living in contaminated post-industrial sites in southern Belgium. Her research aims to understand how pollutants affect lizard population and whether these population can respond adaptively to long-term exposure. She obtained her Master's degree from the University of Pavia (Italy), where she investigated the effects of climate and land-use change on amphibian communities. Her previous research focused on freshwater ecology, amphibian conservation, and aquatic biodiversity.
